What Is It? A hospice is not only a place for residential patients with terminal illnesses, it has a wider philosophy of care and can be taken to patients whether at home, in residential care, day care or in hospital. A hospice also offers valued support, advice and services for families, friends and carers of those with a terminal illness. Care, advice and support are provided by highly skilled doctors, nurses and other professionals, and include:
Ø Residential and respite support Ø Pain relief and control of other symptoms Ø Appropriate spiritual care Ø Physiotherapy and occupational therapy Ø Complementary therapies Ø Counselling and bereavement support Ø Social, cultural and creative activities A hospice works directly with patients, their families and their carers to address their complete needs with a holistic approach during the most difficult of times. Please help… Registered Charity No. 1022027 Our goal The aim of Walsall Hospice is to provide, within Walsall, facilities and services to respond to the physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs of individuals and their families having an illness, which no longer responds to curative treatment, and having a reduced life expectancy, and to demonstrate, teach and promote values, skills and knowledge to this end. Our goal is the achievement of the best quality of life for patients, their families and their carers.
What next?
At the end of 2005, the Walsall Teaching Primary Care Trust, in partnership with Walsall Hospice, decided that the hospice would be built at Goscote. Negotiations are currently taking place to ensure the very best hospice service is established. Once up and running, Walsall hospice will need to raise over £1 million year on year to keep its doors open. The charity will rely heavily on members of the public to raise money and make donations to ensure the future of this much-needed and eagerly anticipated community resource.
The building of Walsall Hospice is only the beginning of the story…
Now the real work must begin…
